More housing will create more pressure at Towerbank. No – currently Towerbank has 11% of pupils from outside the catchment area. As some of the new housing is for elderly residents there is no problem with school numbers.
More jobs will be created – Any jobs provided will be countered by those lost by other retailers.
People will be able to walk to do their shopping – Some people will be able to do this but Aldi rely on people coming to the shop by car. That is why they want such a large car park. Is a large car park something we want to see on the principle approach to Portobello?
The car park can be used by others No – there will be a 90 minute time limit meaning that linked trips to the town centre will not happen.
There is a need for an Aldi in Portobello – The only need is for Aldi to increase its market share. There is no deficiency in Edinburgh as a whole and already there is an Aldi 2 miles away at Fisherrow accessible by bus. There are other discounters within a short distance. Where is the need as opposed to the need for housing?
Portobello says ‘No’ to everything – Wrong, we can all say YES to good quality housing on the Baileyfield site.
